Oldest paper is also the newest

Elizabeth Thompson, editor of the Territorial Enterprise, addresses the crowd inside Adele’s during the launch party Thursday evening. MacAvoy Layne readies for his welcome as Mark Twain.

It’s always news when a newspaper launches, and the resurrection of the Territorial Enterprise has plenty of story lines.

There’s the history itself, of course, as the birthplace of Mark Twain. The optimism of print in an age where it’s being written off. The opportunity to lampoon Nevada politics, one of the few veins actually to become richer since the Comstock.

There was a lode of talent and influence at the launch party Thursday at Adele’s, from the governor — who joked that his cover photo by Cathleen Allison was a little small — all the way down to me. I was pleased as pecan punch to have been quoted in the first issue, as well as have the Nevada Press Association’s logo in a corner of a page. (The TE will soon be a member.)

Much has been written about Twain’s tenure at the TE; not so much about Lucius Beebe and Charles Clegg, who were among the most famous and flamboyant journalists in the country during their era. Their revival of the newspaper took the TE to new heights.

There is so much legacy here, I believe every issue will be awaited eagerly. Good luck to all.
