Nominations sought for Hall of Fame

Nominations are now being accepted for inductees to the Nevada Press Foundation Hall of Fame. The deadline to submit nominations for 2022 is the close-of-business on Friday, July 15.

Candidates should be newspaper professionals who made lasting contributions to Nevada journalism and/or the news industry over the course of their careers. Members can be elected posthumously.

Each nomination must be accompanied by at least one nomination letter; supporting biographical material is encouraged. Both the letters and supporting material should be submitted in an electronic format, which can be sent directly to the Nevada Press Foundation at admin (at) nevadapress.com or via a form on the bottom of this page of our website.

Although there are no hard and fast rules, the organization generally inducts 3-4 new members every year. Our normal practice is to honor recipients from Northern Nevada when our annual conference is held in the northern half of the state and Southern Nevada when we meet in the south. This years’ Hall of Fame Luncheon will be held during the Annual Convention and Awards Banquet on Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Westgate Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

Nominees are vetted by a standing committee. The committee’s report is reviewed by the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, which has the final authority to elect new members.

The Hall of Fame was resurrected in 1998 with the induction of 34 people who had previously been given the NPA’s Silver Makeup Rule Award. A photo gallery and alphabetical list with brief biographies of all of the members of the Hall of Fame can be found here on our website.

  1. I would like to nominate the late Tom Dye for induction into the Nevada Press Association Hall of Fame. Tom worked for many years at the Review-Journal as the sports editor and later as the business editor. He was a dedicated and much respected and beloved journalist at the R-J. I saw and experienced this first-hand working at the paper from 1984-1997. Tom also was the long-time manager of the R-J softball team, which achieved notable success in the media league. In addition to his newspaper skills, he was a calm editor and a great team player and ambassador for the newspaper. He was the only person at the newspaper, who got along with everyone, which was a huge intangible. I’m happy to talk more about him if you need more information. Thanks.

  2. I nominate Tom Dye for the Nevada Press Association Hall of Fame. The University of Nevada, Reno, graduate was a Nevada journalist for decades, starting as a sportswriter for Reno-area newspapers. He was hired at the Las Vegas Review-Journal in 1973 and was a Swiss Army knife for the paper: writer, sports editor, business editor and assistant news editor. In all of these roles, he was much respected, and he retired at the RJ in 2008.

  3. The late Tom Dye deserves more than a nomination to the Hall of Fame. He deserves to be inducted. During a career that spanned 35 years, Tom did whatever was needed for the Las Vegas Review-Journal, and did it all well. During my years in Las Vegas, 1981-87, I quickly grew to respect Tom as a journalist and humanitarian. He cared about the product as well as his co-workers, and I was proud to call him a friend. Please consider his credentials and posthumously give him the honor he truly deserves.
