Three NPA-member newspapers consolidate

The Humboldt Sun, Battle Mountain Bugle, and Lovelock Review-Miner will combine print editions under a single name — the Great Basin Sun — according to a statement issued last week by Nevada News Group owner and publisher Peter Bernhard. Bernhard blamed printing costs and production schedules for the change, which he stressed won’t affect news coverage in any of the affected communities.

“We still will provide the same news coverage, but in a single newspaper as opposed to three,” said Bernhard.

Nevada News Group was forced to find a new publisher when the printing plant it used in Carson City was shuttered, Bernhard explained. With no printing presses remaining in Northern Nevada, the company — which also owns the Nevada Appeal in Carson City, the Record-Courier in Minden-Gardnerville and Northern Nevada Business Journal in Reno — was forced to move its printing to Tracy, Calif. The loss of the press in Carson City exacerbated a printing crisis we wrote about in 2019.

“Rural communities like Winnemucca, Battle Mountain, and Lovelock are not served by larger media operations,” Bernhard told the papers’ readers. “Facebook content is unedited and many times wildly incorrect. We provide edited content and a single print source of news and single website where you can go to find out what is happening in your community. We provide context to news stories and local government decisions.”
