National Newspaper Week coming Oct. 6-12

The theme for this year’s National Newspaper Week, Oct. 6-12, is “Think F1rst — Know Your 5 Freedoms” and encourages readers to cherish all of the guarantees of the First Amendment.

Nevada newspapers will find several ideas for localizing their Newspaper Week efforts at this site hosted by Newspaper Association Managers. There is no cost to NPA members for the resources, including the 2019 logo, editorial cartoons, opinion columns and an ad campaign (in various sizes) emphasizing those First Amendment freedoms.

“Please also make it local by editorializing about your newspaper’s unique relevance. This can be about your duties as government watchdog, your role as a community forum and coverage of community events, publication of timely public notices, etc.,” said Mark Maassen, executive director of the Missouri Press Association and chairman of this year’s campaign.

The ad campaign is designed to run beyond Newspaper Week and continue throughout the year, if desired. Papers can apply their own flags to the ads.

“Thank you for supporting National Newspaper Week,” added Maassen. “You already know there is power in association. And the same principle holds when associations like ours band together to provide even greater impact — both directly to newspaper members locally and collectively to the overall industry nationwide.

National Newspaper Week is now in its 79th year.
