Comstock Chronicle getting new owner

Another Nevada newspaper is changing hands — this time, it’s the Comstock Chronicle in Virginia City.

IMG_1069Richard and Angela Mann, who have been running the Chronicle for eight years, announced they have sold the weekly paper to Zach and Harry Spencer, who have extensive backgrounds in newspapers and public relations.

Sale of the Chronicle follows the recent acquisition of the Sparks Tribune by Battle Born Media, as well as the sale of Stephens Media newspapers including Las Vegas Review-Journal to New Media.

And in case you haven’t noticed, Virginia City — population about 900 — is a hotbed of journalistic competition.

In addition to the Chronicle, there is the rival Virginia City News and, as of last month, the Territorial Enterprise was revived as a monthly magazine.

Don’t forget longtime newspaperman David Toll’s online Nevadagram, which is the newest member of the Nevada Press Association and based in Gold Hill. And the Reno Gazette-Journal, Nevada Appeal and Reno News & Review are distributed there.

Still, it’s lagging the six daily newspapers that operated in Virginia City and Gold Hill in 1864.
