ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED AUG 1:

It’s been two years since Nevada journalists and media industry executives have attended a Nevada Press Association annual convention and 14 years since the meeting was held in Reno.*

Both streaks will end when NPA members come together to attend the 2021 Nevada Press Association Annual Convention and Awards Banquet at The Depot Craft Brewery Distillery in Reno on Sept. 17-18. Registration is now open for the event. The registration fee is $60 for members and $75 for non-members. (UPDATED SEPT. 3: It will increase by $15 per registration at midnight on Sept. 7.)

The program will begin on a Friday afternoon with an informal gathering hosted by the Reno Gazette Journal at its new headquarters in downtown Reno. It will pick up on Saturday morning at the Depot with the formal membership meetings of the press association and the Nevada Press Foundation, which will be followed at noon by the Hall of Fame Lunch. The 2021 inductees into the Nevada Newspaper Hall of Fame will be honored at the luncheon.

An afternoon program featuring a Legislative Q&A and two panel discussions will follow the lunch. Assemblywoman and Majority Floor Leader Teresa Benitez-Thompson will participate in the Q&A, with Reno Gazette Journal Executive Editor Brian Duggan asking the q’s. NPA Board member Steve Ranson will moderate a panel of local PIOs, and the other panel will feature the journalists responsible for this year’s Story of the Year winner.

In a departure from the past, NPA will not be serving hotel chicken for dinner this year. As a happy alternative, NPA-member magazine Edible Reno-Tahoe has organized A Taste of Reno, a buffet-style event featuring a dozen local restaurateurs each serving their specialties. We guarantee you will never eat better food at a convention!

We’re pretty sure this will also be the first time the convention is held in a local restaurant/brewery. Built in 1910 to serve as the headquarters for the Nevada-California-Oregon Railway, The Depot is housed in beautiful facilities with fabulous meeting space.

Holding the convention outside of a hotel means we weren’t able to block any discounted hotel rooms for attendees. If you are considering attending the convention and will need a room, we strongly encourage you to book a cancelable room NOW to make sure you can get one. Here are some hotels within a 10-minute walk from The Depot:

– Circus Circus Reno

– Courtyard Reno Downtown

– Riverfront Eldorado Resort Casino

– Renaissance Reno Downtown Hotel & Spa

– Silver Legacy Resort & Casino

– Whitney Peak Hotel

You can register for the convention on this website, or you can call the NPA office (Monday through Wednesday only) at 775-885-0866 and pay by credit card. We’ll also be sending a convention schedule and registration form in the mail, in case you prefer to register that way. You can also download a registration form at the link below.
