Swift cuts print days at four papers

Sierra Nevada Media Group, the Swift Communications division in Northern Nevada, announced today it was cutting the number of print issues at the Nevada Appeal in Carson City, The Record-Courier in Minden-Gardnerville, the Lahontan Valley News in Fallon and the Tahoe Tribune at South Lake.

The Appeal, currently publishing six days a week, will be reduced to two days — Wednesday and Saturday. The Record-Courier also will publish in print on two days (Thursday and Saturday), down from the current three-times-a-week schedule.

The Lahontan Valley News and Tribune will be down to one day a week.

“We don’t measure our well-being in the number of times we print per week,” Sierra Nevada Media Group general manager Brooke Warner was quoted in the Appeal. “We measure it in how well and often we produce timely news that serves our community.”

The statement also blamed recent tariffs on newsprint from Canada , “not to mention the impact of the paper on our landfills,” among the reasons for the cutbacks.

Carson City-based Swift also recently ended publication of the North Lake Tahoe Bonanza in Incline Village and shifted operations from Truckee to Grass Valley, Calif. The Northern Nevada Business View changed names and went to a monthly print schedule.

The company owns several properties in Colorado, including Vail and Aspen, and the Park Record in Park City, Utah.
