Small newsrooms doing big things

The Reno Gazette-Journal is partnering with the Journalism School at UNR to host a session by Les Zaitz at noon on Sept. 21 in the RGJ’s newsroom called “Small newsrooms doing big things.”

Here’s where to get more info and register.

Zaitz will be in Reno to accept the prestigious Frank McCulloch Award from the Reynolds School of Journalism. A retired investigative reporter for The Oregonian, he took over the Malheur Enterprise, a struggling weekly paper in Eastern Oregon, and led the news team to challenge the state government for public records.

He’ll drop by the Reno Gazette-Journal newsroom for a Q&A session with Anjeanette Damon, the RGJ’s city investigative reporter, about how newsrooms can produce impactful and in-depth investigative pieces.

All members of the press and interested community members are invited to attend. Register early, as space will be limited.

Here’s more about the Enterprise’s efforts to get records from the state’s Psychiatric Security Review Board on a man who was released from the state hospital and later accused of kidnapping and murdering his ex-wife.
