Review-Journal starts subscription for online news

Starting Sept. 5, the Las Vegas Review-Journal will join the ranks of newspapers charging for access to news on its website, the paper’s digital director announced today.

“The Review-Journal will join the majority of large U.S. newspapers that now charge a minimal amount for access to digital content,” Review-Journal Publisher and Editor Keith Moyer was quoted in the article. “This revenue stream is necessary to support quality journalism.”

Print subscribers will get to read the website at no extra charge.

Others will get five stories a month for free. There’s a 99-cent offer for two months, then the online subscription will cost $8.99 a month.

Some stories, such as obituaries, won’t count against the five-a-month limit, nor will classifieds. And other Review-Journal websites will remain free, as will its email newsletters.

The most recent Nevada newspaper to switch to a paid website was the crosstown rival and joint-operating partner Las Vegas Sun, which launched its program in January. Reno Gazette-Journal, Nevada Appeal, Elko Daily Free Press and Winnemucca Publishing are among the Nevada newspapers that have required some kind of subscription to their online content for several years.
