Las Vegas Review-Journal Editor Mike Hengel told staff members Tuesday evening he has accepted a buyout and is leaving the paper, the latest twist in the ongoing story of the newspaper’s sale.
The brief story on Hengel’s resignation in today’s edition was accompanied by an announcement from the new owners on their intentions for the future of Nevada’s largest newspaper.
Hengel came on board in December 2010 after publisher Sherman Frederick and editor Tom Mitchell were replaced. Hengel had been working as editor of the Pine Bluff, Ark., Commercial newspaper, owned by Stephens Media, the same company that owned the Review-Journal at the time. Hengel had previously been editor of papers in Vallejo and Ontario, Calif.
