Unfortunately, Nevada isn’t one of the five states selected last month by the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press (RCFP) as a host site for an RCFP full-time pro bono lawyer as part of the Washington-based nonprofit’s Local Legal Initiative (LLI). (Read about the Nevada Press Association’s LLI proposal.)
Nevertheless, RCFP recently announced it would continue its partnership with the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) to provide special access to pro bono legal services and a range of resources for all journalists covering the 2020 primaries, political conventions and the general election.
First, RCFP has updated its Election Legal Guide, which answers many of the most basic legal questions reporters covering an election may have. The guide also includes new state-specific information for Nevada and four other early primary and caucus states.
RCFP will also continue to operate its legal hotline for journalists who encounter issues while reporting on the primary elections or political conventions. According to RCFP, the fastest way to reach an attorney through its hotline is by completing an online form, but journalists can also call 1-800-336-4243 or email hotline@rcfp.org.
