Foundation Announces 2022 Contest Changes

Updated April 8, 2022

The Contest Committee of the Nevada Press Foundation met twice via Zoom in the last six weeks and recommended a few modest changes in the rules for the 2022 Awards of Excellence competition. Those changes were approved by the Foundation’s Board of Trustees.

The committee added eight new categories and eliminated seven others. Some of the new categories — Health/COVID Enterprise Reporting, News Enterprise Reporting and Politics/Government Enterprise Reporting — refined broader, more ill-defined categories that were discontinued.

Two other categories — Non-Staff Story and Local Non-Staff Column — were eliminated in favor of explicitly recognizing that work produced by freelancers is eligible to be entered in competition. Freelancer entries in this year’s contest may only be submitted by Nevada Press Association-member news organizations, so the “Open Call” feature that previously allowed freelancers to submit entries through the contest website will be disabled.

The 2022 categories are listed below. New categories are indicated in red text and renamed categories are in blue. Categories that have entry limits and/or are print-only are indicated in parentheses next to the category name.

Work published in print and/or online between April 1, 2021 and March 31, 2022 will be eligible to compete. Entry fees will remain $10 but the late fee for entries submitted subsequent to the initial deadline (May 20, 2022) will increase to $15.

Aside from a limited number of “Sweepstakes” categories (e.g., Story of the Year, Photo of the Year, Outstanding Journalist, etc.), the competition will again be divided into three groups: Urban news organizations, Rural news organizations and Magazines.

The contest website will be opened for entries the first week of April and the entry deadline this year will be May 27.

Serving on the Contest Committee this year were Nevada Press Foundation Trustees Ric Anderson, Las Vegas Sun; Glenn Cook, Las Vegas Review-Journal; Brian Duggan, Reno Gazette Journal; Terri Janison, Janison Enterprises; Steve Ranson, Lahontan Valley News; and Jim Sanford, former editor and publisher of Mason Valley News. Nevada Press Association President and Elko Daily Free Press Ad Director Nancy Streets advised the committee on changes in the advertising categories.
