German to be honored at Convention

The late Jeff German will be inducted into the Nevada Newspaper Hall of Fame at the Nevada Press Foundation Annual Convention next weekend. The Foundation’s Board of Trustees this week approved his early entry into the august group of Nevada journalists, which includes figures like Mark Twain, Nellie Mighels Davis, Hank Greenspun and Mike O’Callaghan.

Jeff’s death is, indeed, horrific,” said Foundation Chairman Sherman Frederick. “But it’s not the end of the story. Jeff will become a symbol for hard-nosed reporting in Nevada. Journalists not born yet will work in Reno, Elko, Hawthorne, Ely, Pahrump, Mesquite and Las Vegas inspired by his work.

German was one of the pre-eminent investigative reporters of his time, aggressively plying his trade in Las Vegas for over 40 years until his life was tragically cut short earlier this month in a murder that shocked the nation. In the remembrances that have followed German’s death, the professional attributes mentioned most frequently by those who knew and worked with him were courage, relentlessness and an innate sense of fairness and justice. German will join the late Bob Brown, Steve Carp, Jane Ann Morrison and Tom Tait in this year’s Hall of Fame class. They will be formally inducted during the Hall of Fame Luncheon at next weekend’s convention, which will be held Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino.

German will also be honored that evening during the Foundation’s annual Awards Banquet, a celebration of the best journalism and advertising produced in Nevada in 2021. The Las Vegas Review-Journal’s John Katsilometes will emcee the event.

Registration for thc convention closes next Wednesday, Sept. 21.
