Best Breaking News Reporting

1. Taylor Pettaway
Nevada Appeal
Kings Canyon crash
Judge’s comment: The reporting did a great job of following the development of the crash and how it affected the community. It included all the necessary details of the crash. The inclusion of how the reporter obtained the information and the follow-up on the vigil and fundraisers really rounded out the breaking news story.
The reporters in this category did an excellent job of providing timely coverage of breaking news and producing coverage that kept the public informed.
2. Selwyn Harris
Pahrump Valley Times
Pahrump area youths burned by gasoline-fueled fire

3. Kurt Hildebrand

Judge’s comment: The writer did an outstanding job of conveying this little girl’s resilience.
2. Steve Ranson, Laci Thompson

Holocaust
Judge’s comment: Nicely done. It’s important to tell these types of stories before the people who lived through this are all gone.
The only reason I didn’t rank this first is the lede. The story is about holocaust survivors, not necessarily the people who rescued them. I would have much preferred a lede that put me behind the wire in one of the camps when the soldiers arrived.
3. Robin Hebrock
Pahrump Valley Times
Warm experience at a chilly Chili Cook-Off in Pahrump

Judge’s comment: Nice use of white space. Really like the rail down the side with a few highlighted stories, weather and inside this issue. Clean flag for good branding for the newspaper. Nice large photos without taking over the whole page.
The top two were quite close. The deciding factor was the rail on the side breaking up the very tall page and no ads at the bottom to distract from the stories, the purpose of our publications.
