Editorial or the Year
Glenn Cook, Las Vegas Review-Journal
“A budgetary black hole”
“Great opening graph.  Everything to follow flows nicely and appropriately. While I give it the max score of 40 for first two criteria, and want to award 40 for importance, I don’t know how the readers reacted. Good job to writers listed below:”

“Three submissions hold my attention. I commend the publications and writers: Reno Gazette Journal writer Steve Falcone who doesn’t judge the person, but gives F to the process; Las Review-Journal  writer Vin Suprynowicz, for his piece on emergency management black hole for funding; and the Las Review-Journal on its work to open the interchange collecting dust, by Glenn Cook. As I write these remarks, I have not named/determined the winner in my mind, but you won’t read this page in the order written.  Honorable mention to other two.”

Multimedia Story
1. Las Vegas Sun
“Water”
“ This package stood out for a cuple of reasons.  First it was all very neatly done:  package, was clean, artwork was all top notch as was quality of video and audio.  It was smarly designed to give readers multiple entry points, esy to navigate, and there were different mediums in which to explore the issue.  The thing that pushed it ahead of the rest was the issue itself.  Many multimedia pieces are great stories, but they don’t necessarily have that individual impact on the reader.  This is an extremely important issue across the country, and the package was able to show not only the broad scope, but also the impact to the individual.  This is what multimedia should be.  Nicely done.”
2. Las Vegas Sun
“Construction Deaths”
“Again, very clean package with smart design.  The multiple mediums helped to tell the story, giving readers options, which is important.  I would like to see this have a page all its own to avoid some of the confusion from the other daily headlines.  It’s an important topic and deserves its own space.  The breakdown of accidents and how they happened were especially interesting.”
3. Reno Gazette-Journal
“Immigration”
“Sharp design on an issue that can sometimes be bulky and hard to understand.  This piece has good use of graphics, text, still photos and audio.  Lots of information for the viewer who really wants to immerse themselves, but offered in bite sized pieces for the viewer who wants to dabble and then move onto the next story.  I would like to see more still photographs in this piece.”
Honorable Mention:
Kevin Cannon, Las Vegas Review-Journal
“Laquan Phillips”
“This is the classic beginning, middle and end story and that is what is appealing about it.  Good series of shots, nice use of video.  The editing is very good on this piece – no second is wasted.”
Las Vegas Sun
“History”
“The work on this package is extensive and beautiful.  I really like the interactive map, timelines and video.  Great way to present what can tradionally be a dull topic.  Gorgeous layouts and amazing graphics.  However, it doesn’t have that time element like the top three places.  Regardless, props to the designers.”

“Nevada Boxing Team”
“Above and beyond the others in this category.  Good story line, clean and concise interviews, good variety of shots.  Great opening quote from the coach and some nice moments mixed within (the story).  Combination of video and still shots throws me a little bit.  I would stick with one or the other.  But overall a complete package.  Just a few minor things:  beware of your background audio.  It can be distracting in spots.  Also, use a tripod whenever you can – it’s not always possible, but it immediately increases the quality of your video.”

“Wasting away in Las Vegas”
“Great opening, nice montage of interviews and you get to the point quickly.  Nice squence of video with good use of still shots – by keeping them moving you don’t have such a stark difference between the video and stills.  It works well.  Some interviews need to be cut a little – they can drag a bit, but good variety of voices.”
2. Justin Yurkanin, Las Vegas CityLife
“Bingo Queens”
“Good opening squence – I like how you didn’t give the entire story away all at once.  The variety is good, good use of details and good interviews.  Very slice of life.  Watch your audio a little.  It can be distracting at times.”
3. Michael Quine, View Neighborhood Newspapers
“Bootleg Canyon Flightlines”
“Interesting story – cool approach to video, although it lacks a certain amount of detail shots.  I’d like to see the interview with the President of the company pushed up.  It’s hard to get a feel for what the story is about until you are almost done with it.  Remember to exercise your editing skills and cut anything that is repetitive or does not move your story forward in a meaningful way.”
