What every employer should know about union organization

When a union is trying to organize a newspaper’s employees, employers have many rights of communication – and there are many rules to follow.

Union organizing has been largely dormant in the Southeast for many years. However, the NewsGuild recently organized two newspapers in Florida. In August of 2016, the reporters at The Lakeland Ledger voted 22 to three to unionize; the next month, reporters at the Sarasota Herald-Tribune were unionized by a vote of 22 to 16.

This Jan. 19 webinar is designed to be a primer for newspaper executives, management, and supervisors to learn their rights during a union organizing drive.

Michael Zinser is president of The Zinser Law Firm, P.C., in Nashville, Tenn. His firm represents more than 250 newspapers. He is general counsel to seven circulation trade associations, including Central States Circulation Managers’ Association.

He has represented many newspapers across the country, counseling them on state and federal wage-hour issues. Additionally, Zinser and his firm have represented and defended newspapers on the independent contractor issue in 40 of the 50 states.

His firm has drafted hundreds of independent contractor agreements for newspapers, helping companies structure independent contractor relationships with their newspaper distributors and freelance writers and photographers.

In recognition of his role in the newspaper industry, Zinser was a 2014 inductee to the National Circulation Director Hall of Fame.
