It looks like new Las Vegas Review-Journal editor Keith Moyer can cross off one of the items on his to-do list: restoring the Associated Press, after a cost-cutting absence of more than a year.
A tweet from AP reporter Michelle Rindels in Las Vegas says the match has been re-made.
The Review-Journal had tried to fill the void with a patchwork of services, including Reuters and CNN, but nothing has the reach of AP.
Most telling, for me, was the lack of news coverage from around the rest of Nevada.
The Review-Journal’s two-person capital bureau in Carson City gives it top-notch coverage of state government and some other Northern Nevada stories, but that’s not the equivalent of the local reporting in Reno, Carson City, Elko and elsewhere that comes from the state AP wire.
AP still has not only boots on the ground in Reno, Carson City and Las Vegas, but moves local stories from all its members. There’s still no network of resources to compete with AP’s organization.
