By Richard Karpel, NPA Executive Director
I only knew Ande Engleman a short while before she passed away on June 12, but from the first time we met I was impressed by her grit and intelligence. Even at the age of 79, she was quick-witted and not shy about telling you what she believed.
And what she believed most passionately was that open government is essential to a well-functioning democracy, and that the state of Nevada should take the lead in promoting government transparency.
As her obituary in the Review-Journal attests, she had a lot of success helping to move the state in that direction as this organization’s first executive director.
She was an especially fierce defender of the state’s Open Meeting Law, which I learned in my first week on the job at NPA when we both attended a meeting of the Attorney General’s Open Meeting Task Force. She fought tooth and nail over every change suggested by government lobbyists. Unfortunately, she was unable to attend the following meeting because she was already too sick from the cancer that would ultimately kill her.
She was a great teacher and connector and we will miss her.
