The Nevada Press Association’s top individual awards go to outstanding journalists in two categories. Here are this year’s winners.
For Urban Daily, Urban Weeklies and Magazines:

Yesenia Amaro
Las Vegas Review-Journal
From the nomination:
Yesenia Amaro is an unstoppable force. In two short years as a Review-Journal staff writer, covering social issues, she has provided exemplary watchdog coverage of some of the most difficult to penetrate public agencies and functions.
Judge’s comment:
Nice varied body of work. Inspirational in overcoming personal hardship. Excellent investigative skills.
For Intermediate and Community newspapers:

Robert Perea
Fernley Leader
From the nomination:
As the sole staff reporter for the weekly Leader-Courier, Perea’s strength as a journalist is his versatility. He is equally adept at covering breaking news, reporting and writing in-depth enterprise or feature stories or sports, and on any subject, including crime, courts, government, education, public interest or human interest stories.
Judge’s comment:
Robert Perea would be a treasure for any community newspaper. He apparently can do it all and do it well. Stories could use a few more direct quotes, but all the info was there! What did it for me was his efforts to stay in touch with readers. That connection is very important.
