We allow individuals to enter their own work in the annual Better Newspaper and Magazine contests, as long as it appeared in a member publication or web site during the contest year.
Most of the time, the newspapers and magazines enter the work of their staff members or regular contributors.
But sometimes, a freelance writer or photographer may want to enter their own story or photo — or any of the other individual categories — to be considered by the judges. There are circumstances, too, when a person worked for one publication and then moved to another, or worked only part of the contest year for an NPA member.
Regardless of the circumstances, their work qualifies if it was published by an NPA member publication in good standing. Each year, we have several winners who submitted their own stuff.
How to enter?
It’s essentially the same as the regular entry process, except that you first have to create an ‘Open Call Contestant’ account on the Better Newspaper Contest site. It asks a few questions so we know who you are, and then we get a notification that asks us to approve your account. That means approval doesn’t happen automatically, so give us a day or two to respond. Once we do, you’ll be able to upload your entries.
They cost the same as regular entries — $8 per. You’ll need to pay before we confirm your entries for judging.
