2004 awards tabEditorial of the Year
“MONORAIL GOES TOO FAR WITH ADVERTISING TRAP”
Mike Campbell, In Business Las Vegas
“This is a nicely crafted editorial, starting with some general observations in support of advertising in mass transit systems, then gently leading the reader into a case where the practice has been badly abused.  It doesn’t tell the reader he should be outraged, it allows the outrage to come from the reader.”

Best Explanatory Journalism
1. “THE TRUCKEE RIVER TOMORROW”
Staff, Reno Gazette-Journal
“Quantity should never be mistaken for quality, but the quantity of stories in this package certainly is justified.  Many ‘in-depth’ stories are simply too long and poorly organized.  This package is just the opposite.  Great job putting the history of past efforts in perspective.”
2. “THE DYS-ORDER”
Dave Berns, Las Vegas Review-Journal
“Being a journalist in Arizona for more than 20 years, I am well acquainted with the issues surrounding polygamy – yet I read much in this story that was new to me.  Breaking the personal stories out from the business angle – making for two stories – would have made them more accessible.”

2.  Las Vegas Sun
“The most attractive layout of the entries.  Very readable, enticing.  Set-up on your editorials – at issue, our take – is most helpful to readers.  But…under the criteria for judging, you are severely penalized for lack of letters – 2 or 3.  Bump Ralston column to another spot and replace with letters, and you would measurably improve package.”

3.  “LAKE TAHOE GOLF COURSE”

Advertising General Excellence
1.  Reno Gazette-Journal
“The Reno Gazette-Journal is filled with a great mix of large and small space ads.  The ‘local’ ads are well designed, contain a call to action and use white space.  The many color ads make good use of the color.  It’s not gratuitous.  The pages are designed to give the ads space while allowing the editorial to breathe as well.  The classified section is robust.  The main header is weak but the category headers are very helpful.  Once you are into the section it’s easy to navigate, and ‘Homes’ – good grief – 48 pages of liner and display ads with pertinent editorial/content.  The house ads could use help.  Boring and the same cars.com ad repeated within the same paper.  Overall – an excellent advertising effort.  Well done.”
2.  Las Vegas Review-Journal
“The Review-Journal is loaded with ads and plenty of color.  There is a great collection of large and small space ads that are generally well designed.  Small space local advertisers actually make their way into ‘A’ section.  The ads in the Entertainment Section support the editorial content, are plentiful and are well designed.  Ad placement doesn’t detract from the paper’s appearance but it still showcases the ads no matter the size.  The classified section is robust.  The main header is ok as are the category headers.  The section is easy to navigate.  One classified section ad contained an awful auto description.  Too much color!!  I liked the yellow on liners, but it seems oversold and eventually became white noise.  Overall – excellent.”
3.  Tahoe Daily Tribune
“The Tahoe Daily Tribune contains an excellent mix of large and small space retailers.  They do an excellent job with real estate (Tahoe Real Estate).  The ad count is excellent and is a good mix of local, regional and a smattering of national ads.  Page layout gives good play to all ads.  The classified section is robust and has a good main header.  The reverse category headers get lost against the smaller reverse ads.  The local ads are generally well designed but some tend to be on the busy side – too much copy.  ‘Service Guide’ – well done.  The slick stock ski section was very impressive.  Overall – a little short of excellent.  Very well done.”

2.  “GROWING WITH TRUCKEE”
Wendy Mason, Sierra Sun
“What a great way to show how the Sierra Sun is keeping pace with the community of Truckee.  Keep the circulation promos coming.  Good rack card.”
3.  “WIND DOWN, CATCH UP”
Heather Adams, Pahrump Valley Times
“Outstanding use of type, graphics and layout.  This ad could appear anywhere in the paper and would dominate the page.  Great reader appeal.”
Honorable Mention:
“ADVERTISING IN THE RENO NEWS & REVIEW”
Andrea Diaz-Vaughn, Reno News & Review
“Testimonials have a broad reader appeal, and utilizing one from the pet play house’s Lisa Jaramillo, along with a photo of man’s best friend is a great closer.”

Advertising General Excellence
1.  Tahoe World
“This paper contains an excellent mix of small and large space local advertisers.  Ads are generally well designed and color is effectively utilized.  Good ad count – but doesn’t overwhelm page layout.  Classified section is robust, easy to navigate and the category heads are easy to see.  Well done overall.”
2.  Northern Nevada Business Weekly
“This paper contains well designed ads that effectively support the editorial content.  Excellent ad count.  Page layout of ads allows editorial to breathe.  Good mix of small and large space ads.  Classifieds dominated by real estate, house ads are timely – not boring.  Good testimonials.”
3.  Las Vegas CityLife
“This paper is chock full of full color ads with a good balance of small space black and white ads.  The ads are well designed.  Some of the color use seems gratuitous.  Classified headers are weak and the section is jumbled.  The ads support the editorial content.”
