Las Vegas Review-Journal Executive Editor Glenn Cook and The Nevada Independent environmental reporter Daniel Rothberg were elected as the volunteer leaders of the Nevada Press Foundation (NPF) and the Nevada Press Association (NPA), respectively, at the annual meetings of the organizations that were held earlier this month.

Cook (picture at right) was elected to the NPF Board of Trustees in 2021 and previously served as a member of the NPA Board, including a stint as president in 2018-2019. Cook replaces Battle Born Media CEO Sherman Frederick as the Foundation’s Chairman. Frederick was elected to an at-large position on the Board.

“Many thanks to Sherman Frederick for leading this board for so long,” Cook said. “I’m very appreciative of the Board’s trust in me to succeed him.”

Terri Janison, president of Janison Enterprises and executive director of Friends of Red Rock Canyon, and retired Mason Valley News editor/publisher Jim Sanford were also elected as Board officers. Janison was elected VP/Treasurer and Sanford took over as Board Secretary.

NPF Board members also approved an amendment to the organization’s bylaws that established staggered, two-year terms for board seats.

Rothberg was first elected to the NPA Board at last year’s annual meeting in Reno.

“At a time when the news industry faces both opportunities and many challenges, I’m looking forward to working with the Nevada Press Association board to advocate for journalists across the state,” he said. “As board president, I’m committed to building strong coalitions, standing up for press freedom and continuing to make our organization more accessible, inclusive and transparent.

“If NPA members have any ideas for how we can improve and better advocate on behalf of our member’s interests, please don’t hesitate to reach out.”

Joining Rothberg (picture at top of story and at right) as officers of the association are Nevada Legal News Publisher Scott Sibley, who was reelected Treasurer, and Reno Gazette Journal Executive Editor Peggy Santoro and Nevada Current senior reporter Dana Gentry, who were elected First Vice President and Second Vice President, respectively. Gentry was already serving on the board and Santoro had last served as a director in 2018-2019.

This is Reno Publisher/Editor Bob Conrad and Las Vegas Sun/Greenspun Media Group managing editor/news Dave Mondt were elected to at-large seats. It is Conrad’s first term on the board. Mondt was originally appointed to an at-large seat earlier this year to replace his former Greenspun colleague Ric Anderson, who moved out of state.  Steve Ransom, LVN Editor Emeritus for the Nevada News Group remains on the NPA board after being elected in 2021.
