Lerude began his journalism career as a reporter for The Associated Press fresh out of journalism school at the University of Nevada, Reno. He went on to become editor and then publisher of the Reno Gazette-Journal. He shared a Pulitzer Prize in 1977 for a series of editorials that attacked brothel owner Joe Conforte.
