Steven R. Ranson’s career is a testament to the power of journalism rooted in service, community, and excellence. Over the course of more than three decades, Ranson built a reputation as one of Nevada’s most respected local news leaders, serving as journalist, editor, mentor, military officer, and civic contributor. His enduring commitment to telling the stories of Nevada’s communities—particularly rural ones—has left an extraordinary legacy.
Ranson is best known for his work with the Lahontan Valley News in Fallon, where he served as editor from 2008 to 2017 and helped guide the newspaper to more than 150 journalism awards, including national recognition for both editorial writing and sports coverage. His leadership elevated the News as a model of quality small-town journalism—relentlessly local, deeply engaged, and professionally executed.
His love for storytelling began as a sports reporter for the Wells Progress (1976–1983), where he not only covered local athletics but also profiled community events and the everyday lives of residents in northeastern Nevada. At the same time, Ranson wore many hats—high school English and journalism teacher, city councilman, EMT-II, fireman, and dedicated public servant—underscoring his deep investment in the communities he covered.
Ranson’s impact extended far beyond the newsroom. A retired lieutenant colonel in the Nevada Army National Guard, he served in public and community affairs roles, using his communication skills to bridge the military and civilian spheres. In 2012, he was inducted into the Nevada Army National Guard Hall of Fame—a reflection of his decades of honorable service to the state and country.
Throughout his career, Ranson demonstrated a consistent commitment to preserving local history, honoring achievement, and mentoring others. He co-founded the Greenwave Hall of Fame, which celebrates Churchill County High School athletic and community excellence, and he has been a tireless advocate for both veterans and student journalists. His influence has shaped local policy, elevated public discourse, and inspired generations of aspiring writers and editors.
In 2018, Ranson was inducted into the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association Hall of Fame, recognizing his contributions to high school athletics and journalism.
Steven R. Ranson represents the highest ideals of Nevada journalism: community service, integrity, perseverance, and a steadfast belief in the value of local news. His work has not only informed the public—it has strengthened the fabric of rural Nevada.
