Guy Clifton

Guy Clifton was a gifted journalist, celebrated author, and passionate chronicler of Nevada’s people, places, and past. Over the course of a distinguished 30-year newspaper career, Clifton not only reported the news—he brought Nevada’s rich and quirky history to life, connecting generations through stories that honored the state’s culture and identity.

Born and raised in the small town of Gabbs, Clifton’s love for Nevada ran deep. He attended local schools and went on to study journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he sharpened his storytelling skills at the Nevada Sagebrush, serving as editor in 1985–86. His commitment to journalism was evident early on, and it would blossom into a career that left a lasting mark on the Silver State.

Clifton began his professional career as sports editor of the North Lake Tahoe Bonanza in 1986, followed by his role as editor of The Record-Courier in Gardnerville. But it was at the Reno Gazette-Journal where he would spend the majority of his career—22 years reporting on everything from city council meetings to Nevada Day celebrations, with a special focus on human-interest stories and state history.

Renowned for his ability to blend meticulous research with warm, engaging prose, Clifton became one of Nevada’s most beloved storytellers. His writing captured the soul of the state—its miners and ranchers, pioneers and politicians, roadside diners and forgotten towns. His columns weren’t just journalism—they were a love letter to Nevada, delivered one story at a time.

In addition to his reporting, Clifton authored eight books, all rooted in Nevada themes. Among them, the popular “You Know You’re a Nevadan If…” series earned wide acclaim and further solidified his role as a cultural ambassador for the state. His books and columns didn’t just preserve Nevada’s past—they celebrated it, making it accessible and meaningful to readers of all ages.

Clifton’s legacy is not only measured in bylines and books but by the enduring connection he built between Nevadans and their shared heritage. He inspired curiosity, pride, and a sense of place. His work was widely recognized with awards and honors, but his true achievement was in capturing the stories that might otherwise be forgotten—and doing so with humor, humility, and heart.

Guy Clifton’s induction into the Nevada Press Hall of Fame honors a lifetime of storytelling, historical preservation, and journalistic excellence. His words brought Nevada to life for thousands, and his legacy will continue to inform and inspire for generations to come.
