Bill Roberts, a journalist for the rest of Nevada

We were saddened to hear of the death of Bill Roberts, a former NPA president and longtime journalist whose knowledge will be sorely missed.

A full obituary may be found in the Pahrump Valley Times. He was 64.

Bill Roberts (1)Services are scheduled for Sunday afternoon in Tonopah.

Bill was president of NPA in 1980-81, representing Central Nevada Newspapers. Since 1975, he and his family covered the massive middle of the state — Tonopah, Goldfield, Austin, Eureka — little known to the residents of the metropolitan areas of Nevada.

His father, Gerald, is a member of the Nevada Newspaper Hall of Fame.

I didn’t know Bill well, but I read his columns with an appreciation for how close he was to his community and the people he has written about over the years.

When I called him a couple of times to talk about stories he’d written, he was as enthusiastic in getting the news to the residents of Tonopah and Goldfield as he was as an “outstanding young journalist” honored by NPA.

He not only knew the history and people of Central Nevada, he and his family are a large part of it — from ownership of the legendary Reese River Reveille to Bill’s record as an Eagle Scout, star on the high-school football field and class valedictorian.

Our condolences to his wife, Bobby, and the rest of the family.
