Newspaper Association Managers to meet in Reno

Newspaper Association Managers, the group representing press association directors across the United States and Canada, will hold its annual conference in Reno on Aug. 9-12.

The group is meeting at the Peppermill to discuss issues ranging from legislation affecting newspapers to revenue-raising ideas. About 50 people are expected.

The Nevada Press Association is the local host for the conference.

“This is our once-a-year opportunity to gather press association directors from around the country and talk face to face about our industry,” said Barry Smith, executive director of the Nevada Press Association.

Among the scheduled speakers is David Chavern, chief executive officer of the Newspaper Association of America. Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve will welcome the group to Northern Nevada.

NAM President is Lisa Hills, director of the Minnesota Newspaper Association, and the chairman for the conference is Layne Bruce, director of the Mississippi Press Association.

NAM began in 1923 when Edwin A. Bemis, then manager of the Colorado Press Association, asked full-time state press association managers to meet in Denver to form a national organization through which managers could work toward solving mutual problems. Seven managers participated in that first meeting.
