Death of a muckraker

Warren Hinckle is taken out of The Chronicle by Officers Marty Sacco (left) and Ross Laflin for outstanding warrants, one for walking his dog sans license in this 1985 photo by Eric Luse.

The death of muckraking San Francisco journalist Warren Hinckle brought back vivid memories of the hard-drinking gadfly’s appearance at the 1988 convention of the Nevada Press Association in Ely.

“Knew him well,” wrote Warren Lerude, NPA Hall of Famer. “Once drove him and Bassett Bentley from Ely, Nevada, to Virginia City where I deposited him in a saloon from which he found his way on to San Francisco. Bentley loved riding in our Mercedes with his great head hugging the air conditioner flow between the two front seats to his perch with Hinckle in the back.”

Lerude’s story is verified by this clip from that convention.
